B Grade & Premier C Grade Results 11/01

 B Grade – Moe v Raiders

Moe Innings

B Grade were sent in by Raiders, and the visitors plans came to fruition mostly, with a narrative of two collapses throughout the innings. After losing Kye Micallef (2) early, Mark Whitney & Shannon Murphy progressed Moe to 1/43 (15) at the first drinks break.

The second period of the innings overs 16-30 were not good for the hosts, losing 3/7 as part of just 16 runs in the middle 15 overs.

Ben McCartney fell for 7 and A Grade skipper Noah Kane arriving late was bowled for 1, 6/77 before another clump of 4/13 saw Moe all out for 103. Extras ended up top scoring with 23, whilst Whitney (12) & Glibanovic (16) also made double figures. Hill & Sidhu both took 3 wickets for Raiders with Pooni & Quinsey-Munro collecting 2 scalps each.

Raiders Innings

Hecker (6), Hill (4) & Daddo (1) all fell to Robert Blunt at one end, but Singh Rai kept the score ticking over, Daddo out at 3/46.

Singh Rai & Arora put Raiders in reach with the score climbing to 94 as the storm was threatening. Singh Rai 53, was bowled by Ben McCartney shortly after making a half century. Arora 19 was caught off Whitney & Sidhu 🦆 off McCartney to make it a collapse of 3/2 in the space of 5 overs, Raiders now sitting precariously at 6 down, but only 7 runs to get.

Following Sidhu’s dismissal, the lightning had moved within very close proximity to the venue, so players had to leave the field with the rain arriving whilst the covers were being put on. Due to time, and wet/unsafe pitch and ground, the game was abandoned. Due to no DLS outside of the A Grade divisions, it meant no result. Raiders were ahead on DLS had it been in play, like Moe were ahead in December vs Centrals in a game also abandoned mid match. Swings and roundabouts in a season.

With all of the top 4 seeing their games abandoned, Raiders remain top, Centrals & Moe 2pts behind them. Imperials sit a win back in 4th. Willow Grove got a result to sit 2 wins behind Imps.

Next Up – Willow Grove at Ted Summerton 18/1

Premier C Grade –  Mirboo North v Moe

Moe were sent in and proceeded to put on a very strong total. Nic Reed top scored with 44 off 56, including 7 fours. Craig Veenman hit 5 fours in his 33 off just 26 deliveries and Garry Edwards cracked 7 boundaries in 32* off 27 balls. Matt Burridge scored 21 opening, his highest score since joining the Lions. Aaron Scicluna took 4/25 off 8 for the Tigers with singles to Salas, Hutton, Degennaro & Calder.

King (6) & Scicluna (28) added 28 for the first wicket before Tyler Duff (2/10) dismissed King & Robinson (0). Biggins (1/26) made the collapse 3/4 shortly after.

Only Calder 21* & Banks 16 made double figures as Mirboo were bowled out for 98. Ronnie Whitney took another five wickets, finish in with stellar figures of 5/10 off 8. Duff took 2 wickets with singles to Schultz, Edwards & Biggins.

Moe increase the gap between them (3rd) and Mirboo (4th) with the win to 10pts. Level on points with top 2 Ex Students & Toongabbie for now, their results yet to be entered.

 Next Up

– vs Ex-Students away at T’gon Rec 9.30am, playing prior to A Grade’s day/night match.

A Grade Debutant – Brodyn Blandford

Presented his cap by grandfather Gary Blandford last week, the young wicket-keeper’s debut was delayed by 7 days due to rain. Although Noah Kane was back in the side (unavailable day 1 of original fixture), Blandford still took the gloves and excelled in his first match.

Brodyn collected 4 catches & took part in a run out before finishing 1* in the thrilling chase.

What a start to his 1st XI career!

Congratulations Brodyn!

B Grade Round 8 Match Day Results Nov 23rd

B Grade – Latrobe v Moe

Atkinson & Blunt (7 wickets last meeting) were missing from the Lions bowling from their last clash, with Mick Zomer & Borlase (64 off the 100 runs that game) missing for the Sharks.

Latrobe Innings-

Madden (26) & Brewer (19) made 45 of the runs for the Sharks. The rest & extras combined for just 22 as the hosts couldn’t only muster a total of 67. Ritvik 3/8, Daniel Farmer 3/15 & Mark Whitney 2/4 did the damage for Moe, with 2 run outs in a strong bowling performance.

Moe Innings-

Similarly to the chase last meeting, Braden Finn (22) & Mark Whitney (26*) set out to get the runs quickly, with Finn dismissed at 1/49 in just the 11th over. Jesse Pheeney (10* off 7) hit a quick few with Whitney to finish the job in 12.5 overs. Duncan took the only two wickets last meeting, and followed it up with the only scalp this time.

B Grade sit 4th, a win off top and two wins ahead of 5th. Play Willow Grove (5th) away next week.

Italian Australian Sporting Club T20 Competition

Group D, Match Day 1

Moe Lions vs Morwell Tigers

The opening matches of the revamped T20 competition saw the two Premier A Grade teams in group D face off (Moe v Morwell) and the two A Grade teams in the group oppose each other (Latrobe v Rovers).

Morwell fielded their full strength first XI, in line with their one day meeting in October. Moe featured just four from that match with a number of players from the lower grade, mostly B Grade, getting a taste of the higher level.

Morwell Innings-

After electing to bat, Morwell found themselves in trouble early courtesy of Robert Blunt (2/16 off 4), dismissing Homyoon (0) caught behind & Seymour (4) bowled without offering a short then followed it up with a fortunate run out at the bowlers end to get rid of Clymo (14). Ritvik (1/28) deepened the Tigers’ wounds having Cukier (0) out first ball to see them precariously sitting at 4/32.

Tim Ford (63 off 35) joined Jordan Campbell (67 off 43) to dig the Tigers out of trouble initially, before putting their side in a commanding position. The pair added 119 before they were both dismissed in consecutive overs at the hands of Blunt again, Ford a direct hit run out, then a catch off the bowling of Zomer (1/29) to end Campbell’s knock. Blake Mills (3) fell victim to another direct hit run out, this time by Keenan Hughes. Brincat 9* & Day 1* were at the crease at the closure, Morwell posting 7/164 from their 20 overs.

Moe Innings-

T20 Skipper Benn Zomer tried to set the tone right away, blasting the first ball of the innings to the fence. It was the only boundary he could muster though, caught off Brincat (2/16) for 7. Randy Straughair (5) became Brincat’s second victim and Jesse Pheeney (4) fell to Ford, Moe reduced to 3/18 early. That became 4/36 after 7 overs following Shields’ (7) dismissal, very similar to Morwell’s 4/32 at the same stage.

Like Ford & Campbell earlier, Keenan Hughes (51 off 41) & Noah Kane (39* off 40) put on a significant partnership (73) but not quite at the same rate. Hughes fell at 5/108 in the 17th over and he was quickly joined back in the pavilion by Finn (0). Kane & Edwards (8*) saw Moe close at 6/132 from 20 overs. They may have gone down by 32 runs, but didn’t lose any admirers – competing strongly despite the lineup discrepancy on paper.

Group D Update-

Elsewhere, Rovers 9/116 (20) def Latrobe 6/100 (20) to start their campaign with a win. Moe need to win both matches against Rovers & Latrobe to secure advancing without relying on other results.

New Signing Keenan Hughes !!

The Moe Cricket Club are excited to announce the signing of Keenan Hughes to The Den for the 2024/25 & 2025/26 seasons.

Keenan did have a brief stint at the club in 2018/19 with an unbeaten half century and a few wickets to his name in just a handful of games.

Keenan now returns as a more accomplished bowling all-rounder in very good form. Season 2023/24 playing for Toongabbie, he took out the Cricket Latrobe Valley Premier A Grade bowling aggregate with 31 wickets and finished 6th in the league for batting aggregate with 361 runs.

Keenan will be a much-welcomed addition to complement our existing lineup and we can’t wait to see the results it could bring.

Welcome back Keenan!
