Glengarry vs Moe @ Fred King Oval
Day 1 Scoreline
Moe 275 (Zomer 146, Kane 54, Freitag 4/54)
Glengarry 1/4 (4)
Day 2 Review – Magpies the team to beat.
Glengarry continued their undefeated run at Fred King Oval, chasing down Moe’s strong total of 275 with relative ease, with five of the six batters on Saturday all getting 37 runs or more, led by coach Nathan Freitag.
Starting the day 1/4, the Jenkin & Graham pairing saw off 23 overs and knocked 78 off the total to set Glengarry on their way. Jenkin scored his 46 almost exclusively in boundaries (8 fours & a six) before a rank full toss in Jordan Shields’ first over brought him undone, caught by Philip in the deep. Shields suddenly had 3/1 after two overs and found himself on a hat trick when Graham (37) & Robson (0) both edged to Evan Sheekey in slip to reduce the hosts to 4/91, equalling the most wickets the Magpies had lose to this point of the season. Freitag (2* off 9 at the time) survived the hat trick ball to start Shields’ following over.
Freitag & Sam Marks negotiated 35 overs as a pairing across either side of the lunch break, adding 118 to tick over the team 200. Freitag’s inning ended on 73 (119), with 12 fours. He was caught at cover by Phoenix off Aaron Johnstone to make it 5/209, with 67 runs required and 24 overs still left in the day. Sam Marks (38* off 100) was joined by brother Ben and it was over quickly after that. The pair destructively chased down the remaining runs, Ben Marks posting a quick unbeaten half century (57* off just 46 balls), including 9 fours & a six. Sam added 10 off 39 at the other end, to finish just short of a half century of his own (48* off 139).
The Magpies were asked questions after the Lions strong batting performance and the answers they provided were emphatic. 44 boundaries were hit in Saturday’s chase as Glen took their season runs total to almost 900 for the loss of just 15 wickets this campaign.
Shields finished with 3/41 for Moe, whilst Laytten Smith 1/36 (17) was the only bowler with an economy rate of under 3. Johnstone 1/54 (14) was the only other wicket taker.
The Lions fall to fourth on the ladder and will look to bounce back against Raiders at home next up in a two dayer, just 3 weeks after their one day thriller.
