Weekend Review 18/19 Feb – Aaron Johnstone stars in mixed B Grade weekend

27th February 2023

Aaron Johnstone was the star of the weekend with combined figures of 8/25 (12) & 45 runs across both matches. His Saturday featured a phenomenal 6/1 in their dismantling of Newborough including a double hat trick (4 wickets in 4 balls)

🏏 SATURDAY – Moe 🦁 vs 🐶 Newborough

🐶Newborough batted first and were rolled for just 24 off 24.3 overs. Half of the total came in the form of extras, only Coutts 6, May 4 & Hillis 2 troubling the scorers with 7 ducks on the card. Aaron Johnstone took the aforementioned 6/1 off 4 overs, Ben McCartney 2/4 off 5, Josh Pickering 1/6 off 7, Jordan Shields 1/2 off 1.3 and Bailey Wilson 0/8 off 7 but just one run off the bat.

🦁 With a small chase, the kids were sent in to bat. Mustafa Glibanovic made 10 after Brodyn Blandford 🦆 & Jordan Shields 🦆 failed to trouble the scorers. Johnstone (15*) & Troy Oakley (1*) finished off the match, Moe 3/29 (9).

🏏 SUNDAY – 🦁 Moe vs Mirboo North 🐯

🐯 Mirboo North started shakily at 2/16 (Anders 2, Wise 🦆), Graeme (10) & Steve Rogers added 38 for the third wicket before Logan Anders joined Rogers to put on 52 for the fourth. Rogers having survived an early dropped catch, made the Lions pay as he was eventually dismissed for 67. Anders & Snell added 73 for the 5th wicket, Anders finishing with 35 & Snell retiring not out on 42*. Soplakow (5*) & Walker (1*) finished the innings. Mirboo posting a formidable 5/182 from 45 overs. Aaron Johnstone (2/24 of 8.) was again Moe’s best with the ball, with Farmer, Wilson & Shields getting one wicket each.

🦁 Moe’s top four (Micallef 16, M.Glibanovic 18, Atkinson 8 & P.Spiteri 20) saw Moe through to 2/80 from 30 overs. The highlight being Glibanovic spending 30 overs at the crease, great experience for the up & coming young batsman. Like C Grade the day prior, the only negative was the required total was now 103 off 90 balls, although there were a couple of names in the lineup (Straughair and Johnstone) that could tee off to make a game of it. Straughair (3) was unable to impact falling shortly after Glibanovic & Spiteri quickly followed making it a loss of 3/4 to be 5/87. That became 4/8 when Edwards (1) was dismissed. Jordan Shields (22) & Aaron Johnstone (33) added almost 50 in just over 6 overs to give the Lions a faint sniff but would’ve had to repeat that again to win. They fell in quick succession along with Wilson (2) & Farmer (2) to lose the last 4 wickets for 12 runs and be all out for 152 in the 43rd over. Young Tiger, Logan Anders capped off an unbelievable day, 35 runs with the bat, following it up with 7/40 from 6.4 overs with the ball.

🏏 Summary

Moe have the bye next week so Boolarra (5th) will look to leapfrog the Moe Lions if they can beat the Centrals Lions (6th) next week. The final round match between Moe & Boolarra will decide who makes finals.
